Week 2 Task

Reference Images:

Italian Landscape - Vegetation is lush and green, the terrain runs for miles consisting of small hills and the lighting hits the terrain with a sunset vibe.
 Brazilian Landscape - Vegetation is full and bushy, the terrain consists of small cliffs running along the coastline and the lighting is clear with a midday feel to it.

Himalayan Landscape - Vegetation is non-existent, the terrain is mountainous in the foreground and background, and the lighting is bright considering its location.
 Irish Landscape (Country of Origin) - Vegetation is full but inconsistent, the terrain is drastically uneven and almost mountainous and the lighting is dark with an overcast visual.
Australian Landscape (Country of Origin) - Vegetation is non-existent in the majority of areas and patchy in others, the terrain is flat excluding the cliffs in the background and the lighting is bright with casting shadows from said cliffs.

Week 01 Task

5 Things Learned from Getting Started and Folder Structure Video:

  • The paks within the game folder is basically the entire game mechanics.
  • System config shouldn't be touched, a new file called user.cfg should be created.
  • For any help look at forums or the cryengine creation guide.
  • The resource compiler is important to get working because it compiles textures and cgfs.
  • The 64 bit is faster and allows you to use more memory.

10 Tips and Tricks Related to the Sandbox User Interface:

  • Wireframe mode can be accessed through right-clicking the perspective option as well as a number of other views.
  • Use the search bar to isolate objects, just search their name and it will highlight their location.
  • The status bar allows you to lock objects so you only work on the objects and entities you've selected.
  • Press the number keys to speed up the movement 1-being the slowest and 10-being the fastest.
  • Turning on the terrain tool at the bottom bar allows you to travel through the terrain.
  • The AI/Physics button turns on and off the physics and AI.
  • Double click the input bar to access console variables which allows you to type in and select command prompts.
  • If textures, shadows or scripts aren't operating properly you can go into tools to reload them instead of restarting the program.
  • In order to see every available action on the object/entity you're editing, you can go under view > open view pane in case you forget the shortcut.
  • To select one type of object, use the drop-down selection tool located on the top ribbon edit options. 

5 Ways I Might Customize my Sandbox Editor Setup:

  • Config user commands on the left hand side for my most frequently used commands.
  • Turn on interval save time so the editor auto saves itself over a period of time I set it to.
  • Under tools > preferences I might customize the colours of the command prompt and ribbon bar with shortcut tools.
  • Create a toolbar in the customize panel (right-clicking an empty spot in the ribbon bar > customise) for a frequent shortcut tool I might use that isn't in the default set up.
  • Assign a hotkey function for a frequently used tool, that isn't in the default hotkey set up, through the customise panel under the keyboard tab

3 Ways to Move Around the Sandbox:

  • W, S, A and D to move forward, backward, strafe left and strafe right whilst moving the mouse in the direction you wish to go.
  • Holding the middle mouse button and the right click at the same time whilst moving your mouse in the direction you desire also moves you around the level.
  • Moving the mouse wheel forwards and backwards moves the camera forwards and backwards at the angle and direction the frame is facing.  The middle mouse button + Alt rotates the camera around the centre of the view.

5 Shortcuts and Their Functions:

  • Ctrl 1 and Ctrl 2 are the shortcuts for applying "Follow Terrain" and "Follow Terrain and Snap to Objects."  These options make sure that the object imported is not floating in mid-air and properly implanted on the ground.
  • The search shortcut allows you to view a list of all the objects within a project, as well as use the search bar to search for a desired object.  Ctrl + T gets you to this window.
  • Asset browser lets you search through your connected library in order to import objects and textures.
  • Database view gives editable settings and values for entities such as the mass of it, and its effect when shot at.
  • The lighting and time of day shortcuts allow you to change the time of day, change the direction of the sun, change colour of the sun, alter the intensity etc.
